Finishing Up

I am just putting the finishing touches on my project. The lists are up on the website and I will print everything out tomorrow morning for the binder. I am just writing up the summary of the project now. I think it looks really nice!

Website...or not

I forgot to mention that the website just isn't going to happen. I understand the mechanics of web design and all, but I just don't have the time to create a website and a beautiful, useful project by May 1. I didn't even procrastinate!

Down to the Wire

Hello again. I have been working non-stop on the final project this weekend, I even took a couple of vacation days this week with the mindset to finish up the project. So far I have formatted the information and edited the annotations for letters A-H. In addition I have finished letters A, B, and L in terms of adding pictures and links for the website.

I met with our Network Services person and they gave me the link for a pdf document changer so I can work from home ans still supply our webmaster with the documents for the website.

I finally got Comcast to come out and hook up a land internet connection. I was using Wifi before and it was SOOO slow I couldn't use it for the graphics part of my project. it is amazing how much we rely on the internet for everything.

I will submit all me work from messy collected annotations to the two different leveled fished products for each letter by the end of the week. I wish it was possible to attach documents to a blog!

Website

Oh Snap! I am starting my own website. Really for this class, but I might keep it for myself if I feel disciplined enough. You will notice that it is not mine and in Latin. I used a template and haven't really figured it out yet. Unfortunately my internet connection is as slow as dial-up, so I am going to have to take my computer to work next week and work on all this. For now the 'project definition' tab IS mine. It explains my project. http://sites.google.com/site/librariansoutpost/home

Lists, Lists, Lists

Howdy! I have FINALLY finished the lists!!! Yesterday I finished compiling titles, authors and annotations for levels A-L. The list is pretty good as I really tried to focus on books that I felt would appeal to a wide age and interest range.

I spoke with the head of our network department and she and I are going to meet after CLA to work out a good format so that when we put it on the website it won't lose anything int he transfer. I plan on printing out copies of the lists once they are organized with the graphics, etc. but I also want to have the leveled list posted on the website with the online catalog URL so that people can request the books via our pull list and pick them up. This will help the families with small children/sick children/short on time.

I'm glad it is Saturday. Tomorrow I go to Mohegan for the conference on Monday!

Today's Post

Of course the word "today" will be obsolete in a few hours...

Apparently when i created my other blog I used software that can only be accessed in my building with my office IP address. Good Grief.

The previous post is from yesterday which pretty much gives a recap of what i have been working on anyway. There were a few posts that were lost though. :(

In any case I am throught he letter H for the leveled reading. I want to get through L for the final. For now I am compiling a list of books with their annotations taken from our own catalog at WLA. Next week (after the conference) I plan on organizing the information and making it user friendly. This is taking a very long time! It has been taking a minimum of an hour for each letter and I anticipate spending many hours putting everything together in a user-friendly fashion. My plan is to complete the lists this week and organize/revise next week. then I will add graphics and get it up on the website. Our webmaster will ultimately put it up on the main website, but I will be putting it on our intranet so the staff can use it too.

Yesterday's Post

Wow! I am terrible at blogging! Glad I don't have a blog at work.

Even though I have not been blogging, I have been working on the project. So far I am through the letter E and hope to get through G today since I have the day off.

My process is to locate leveled books online, mostly from Scholastic's website as well as a school website I found. I didn't want to just copy other information though, so I am working to create a list solely off of titles. Once I locate a title that sounds like something kids would actually want to read I look it up on my library's catalog. It need to be a book we own of course! If we do own it I type it up on my master list with the description provided in the summary section of our website.

This is taking forever, but I want to make sure the list is accurate and contains quality books. That said, I am also looking at every book to make sure it is truly in the library and matches the others in terms of level. Some leveled books are not really the same level that they claim to be.

Unfortunately I will probably only get to the end of level L when this project is due. I think it is an excellent start though and certainly helpful to parents. Our elementary schools are grades K-2, so if I can get through level N (I'll continue working even after this is due) then I will be happy to at least have a comprehensive list for those school kids.

I also want to make the list attractive with a graphic of the book for easier searching in the library as well as the location of each book next to the title so parents do not have to do too much searching on their own. Our patrons seem to be a rush quite often!
